E.On and Bionersis start Asian CDM project

26 November 2010

German utility E.On says that it is planning to install power generating equipment at a landfill site in Vietnam that it has recently capped together with partner Bionersis.

The two companies have capped and installed biogas recovery and flaring equipment at the Nam Son landfill near Hanoi and say that the project is their largest Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project in South-East Asia.

The second phase of the project is to include the installation of biogas energy valorization units with the capacity to generate 5 MW of electricity.

By capping the landfill and flaring the methane gas that it emits, E.On and Bionersis say they can “significantly reduce the impact of the Nam Son site on the environment”. They have invested €6.6 million in the project.

Capping Nam Son will avoid emissions equivalent to 4.5 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the next 20 years. The project was declared eligible as a CDM project in October.

“This is another step towards E.On’s goal of creating a world leading carbon sourcing business,” said Hervé Touati, Managing Director of E.On Carbon Sourcing. “Leveraging our energy expertise we are committed to using flexible mechanisms like the CDM as one of the most cost effective ways of tackling climate change.”
