E.On UK has forged an alliance with the Canadian International Test Centre for CO2 Capture (ITC) to develop clean coal and other carbon reduction technologies.
ITC, based at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan in Canada, is working alongside Eon UK’s Power Technology to develop techniques for post-combustion capture of CO2 from coal and gas-fired power stations and industrial plants.
The four year partnership will study how CO2 can be removed from flue gases using a special solvent process, a front runner among the methods for capturing carbon emissions. An important part of the study will be to see how the technology could be retrofitted. After being captured, the CO2 can be compressed into a liquid for long-term storage underground or in exhausted oil fields under the sea.
