The package, called GNOCIS Plus software, has been fitted on a 300 MW unit at the coal-fired Mawan power station in Guangdong province. It automatically adjusts combustion settings in the boiler to minimise NOx production and unburned carbon in ash, while improving fuel utilisation. Test results to date have demonstrated the ability to reduce NOx emissions by up to 45% at full load whilst maintaining efficiency. In a later stage of the project, carbon dioxide emissions should fall as a result of better use of fuel at Mawan.
Professor Allan Jones, E.ON UK’s head of R&D, said: “China is building three coal-fired power stations every month. We need to work in partnership with Chinese industry to come up with practical solutions now to minimise and reduce the future impact of this boom in coal use on our environment.”
