Portuguese wind power generator EDP Renewables has signalled its intent to boost its installed wind power capacity with the signing of a wind turbine procurement contract with Vestas.
The two companies have signed a Master Supply Agreement for the supply of up to 2100 MW of wind turbines for projects in North and South America and Europe between 2010 and 2012.
The agreement is one of the largest global wind turbine orders ever announced and is an indication of renewed growth in the wind industry, says EDP. It is the culmination of a competitive process that was initiated one year ago.
Ana Maria Fernandes, CEO of EDP Renewables said: “Through this agreement, EDPR contracts from Vestas the wind turbine technology that optimises productivity factors of our pipeline and the total cost of ownership, enabling EDPR to have a competitive edge within the wind developing industry.
“It has been a long and highly competitive process which today materialises in the signing of this agreement which will further improve EDPR's positioning in the industry.”
Under the contract, Vestas will supply, install and commission wind turbines with a total capacity of 1500 MW in 2011 and 2012. The agreement could also be extended for a further 600 MW.
The agreement also includes a two-year service and maintenance contract extendable to five or ten years, with a subsequent technical assistance agreement for an additional period.
