EDP, Portugal's largest energy company, is about to begin a major decommissioning and demolition project, the full site clearance of its 7 hectare power plant in Barreiro, Portugal, with the help of UK-based specialist consulting engineer RVA Group.
EDP has 9 million residential customers in Portugal, Brazil and Spain, and is one of the world's largest renewable energy companies. The Barreiro plant, which operated from 1977 to 2009, was EDP’s largest thermal cogeneration power plant and one of the oldest in the group’s extensive portfolio. The old oil-fired station has already been replaced by a modern CHP plant on the same site.
RVA has helped EDP prepare a detailed project specification and tender documentation, and will play a key role in the contractor selection programme. The work will include the demolition of several large structures – a 1000m oil and steam pipeline, an engine room, boiler, the steam turbines, the pumping station and two on-site reservoir tanks, each of 7500 cubic metres.
Antonio Luis Alfonso, EDP’s engineering co-ordinator for decommisioning projects, commented that EDP selected RVA because “RVA's core business is supplying consulting services to companies who have little or no experience in D&D projects – precisely what EDP was looking for.”
Most of RVA's work since its formation in 1992 has been in the UK, but recent projects in France, Hong Kong and Turkmenistan have given it a growing presence in the international and strengthened its ability to take on a worldwide client base.
