According to plan, the combined cycle project will take off next year and can be expanded to 2,400 MW at a future date, when it will consist of six blocks of 400 MW each.
Scheduled to be ready by 2011, so far no decision has been made on the final location for the facility, which is expected to cost some HUF400 billion ($2 billion) in all. However, Emfesz intends to burn natural gas imported from Central Asia at the plant and it is expected to be sited near the coast on the river Tisza, close to a gas import pipeline and the power grid. The company is also planning to build a pipeline from the Ukraine to the power station.
Funding for the construction is expected to come from bank loans.
