EnBW finds Heilbronn repowering solution

31 January 2008

German utility EnBW Kraftwerke AG has awarded Alstom a EUR 20 million contract to repower the Heilbronn Block 7 power plant with an integrated boiler-turbine solution tailored to the plant.

The repowering of the coal-fired plant will improve the plant’s overall efficiency as well as allow an extended range of coal to be fired within the boiler. The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2009.

The contract was awarded to Alstom Boiler Retrofit Stuttgart (EBR) and is the result of work carried out by EBR and Alstom Turbine Retrofit Mannheim group (TSR), which worked closely with EnBW to develop an optimised solution to maximise the plant’s performance and output.

The repowering will also increase the output of the plant, which is equipped with a once-through, tower-type boiler.

The boiler modifications will consist of replacing the existing four bowl mills with higher-performance mills fitted with dynamic classifiers. The new mills will not only improve the mills’ output but also allow an extended range of coals to be fired.

Further key modifications will be made to parts of the pulverised coal ducts and an additional booster fan, which collectively provides a sufficient amount of hot air for the upgraded coal mills, will be fitted.

Two new steam air heaters will be provided to further improve boiler efficiency, while modifications will also be made to the steam turbine equipment.

The award follows on from a previous contract for TSR for the HP-IP-LP retrofit of the steam turbine at the same site in 2007.
