Enel and Sharp in solar agreement

29 May 2008

Enel and Sharp are aiming to capitalise on the growing demand for solar photovoltaic (PV) technology in southeastern Europe through a new strategic agreement.

The two companies are to investigate the feasibility of building a photovoltaic panel manufacturing facility in Italy and are also aiming to build PV fields with a total capacity of 161 MWe. The agreement is part of Enel’s plans to expand its operations in renewable energy and provides Sharp with a route to market for its PV technology.

The two companies will carry out a detailed analysis for the construction of a plant to manufacture PV panels using Sharp’s triple-junction thin-film technology. The plant’s output will go mainly towards meeting the rising demand for PV panels in Italy, South East Europe and the Mediterranean Basin.

Enel.si, Enel’s solar sector company, will market the Sharp panels throughout the region and also through its Italian franchising network to meet demand from the small commercial and residential sector.

Sharp and Enel.si will develop PV fields based on Sharp’s thin-film technology, attaining an installed capacity of 161 MWp by the end of 2011. Once fully in service, these plants will generate more than 220 GWh of electricity per year.
