Enel buys into Greek wind pipeline

4 August 2008

Enel is boosting is presence in the European wind energy sector through the acquisition of a 30 per cent stake in wind pipeline projects with a total capacity of up to 1400 MW.

The Italian utility has signed an agreement with developers Damco Energy and International Constructional to participate in the projects, which are located in Greece’s windiest regions.

The agreement also includes an option for Enel to increase its stake progressively to 80 per cent and to develop an additional 180 MW in Bulgaria. Enel is currently the third largest operator of renewable energy sources in Greece, with 91 MW of installed capacity and 36 MW under construction.

The wind projects under the latest agreement are located in Thrace, where Enel currently operates 63 MW, in Peloponnesus, and in Evia, where Enel operates 16 MW.

Enel says that the move is in line with its strategy to increase levels of renewable energy. It has also targeted Greece as a key market as well as the wider southeastern European market.

Through its Enelco joint venture, Enel is constructing a new 443 MW gas fired combined cycle power plant in Viotia, Greece, and also holds a 447 MW CCGT license in Evros, Greece. Enel also owns 900 MW of generating capacity in Bulgaria, wind and coal developments and electricity consumers in Romania and a coal power plant project under development in Albania.

Enel also announced earlier in July that it is planning to build one of the first offshore wind power projects in the Mediterranean Sea. It has submitted plans for approval for a 115-turbine development with a capacity of up to 575 MW.
