Enel Green Power is to invest millions of euros in the construction of new power plants in Chile after winning a public tender to supply energy to a pool of distribution companies there.
The Italian renewable energy firm said in a statement that the construction of two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants and one wind farm would cost €320 million. Together with an existing power plant, the three new facilities will enable Enel to meet its supply obligations.
At the end of November the firm was awarded the right to sign multi-year energy supply contracts with a pool of distribution companies operating in Chile's regulated market.
It will provide up to 4159 GWh at a price of $128/MWh for the duration of the contracts. Eenrgy supply will start in December 2013 and terminate in 2024.
Enel says that the three new renewable power plants will have a combined capacity of 161 MW and will be located in Chile's Central Region Transmission Network, or SIC.
In the Chilean wind sector, Enel Green Power has recently connected to the grid the 90 MW Talinay wind farm and is completing construction works at the 90 MW Valle de los Vientos wind farm. Last August, Enel Green Power broke ground at its Taltal wind farm (99 MW).
In the geothermal sector, the company is exploring various concessions that have the potential for generating around 100 MW.
