Enel North America and Tradewind Energy, under a strategic partnership signed in 2006, are to develop a wind farm in the Smoky Hills area of Kansas. Built in multiple phases with the first 100.8 MW scheduled to be operational by the end of 2007, when completed, Smoky Hills is expected to total up to 250 MW.
Enel has already contracted to buy 56 Vestas V80 turbines for the project, each with a capacity of 1.8 MW.
Sunflower Electric Power Corp has agreed to purchase 50.4 MW of the Smoky Hills Phase I project’s capacity. An additional 25.2 MW of capacity from Phase I will be purchased by the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities of Kansas City.
In Canada, NeWind, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Enel, has signed a power purchase agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro to build, operate and sell power from the 27 MW St Lawrence wind project.
The St. Lawrence wind project is expected to be operating by the end of 2008.
The move follows the recent purchase of 195 Gamesa wind turbines with a total capacity of 166 MW to be installed in a number of wind plants in Italy.
The transaction, worth more than €138 million, involves the purchase of G5X-850 kW wind generators for delivery between 2007 and 2009.
