Canada’s Enmax Corporation is moving forward with plans to develop a new natural gas fired generation facility that will provide enough electricity for over half the needs of the city of Calgary.
The Calgary, Alberta-based utility has placed an order with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) for an 800 MW combined cycle power plant for the Shepard Energy Centre. The new facility is slated to be on-line in 2012.
MHI will supply two M501G gas turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine for the project. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation will supply the generators.
Enmax says that environmental studies, preliminary engineering and design work for the project are underway. It plans to submit permit applications with the Alberta Utilities Commission and Alberta Environment in early 2009 and start construction in 2010.
MHI received the order through MPS Canada, the Canadian subsidiary of Mitsubishi Power Systems America.
