Entergy buys Yankee

5 August 2002

After long-running negotiations over the precise terms of the contract, Entergy has finalised its purchase of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant from the Vermont Yankee Power Corporation for $180 million. It was due to start operating the plant on 31 July.

This acquisition means that Entergy now owns 10 nuclear plants, five of them in the northeast of the USA, making it the 'second largest and fastest growing in the nation', and the largest in the northeast. The largest US nuclear operator is Exelon, which has a total of 17 operational units.
