EPCOR has made further progress towards its goal of developing an advanced coal-fired gasification power plant equipped with carbon capture technology with the award of a contract for engineering services.
The Canada-based utility has chosen Jacobs Engineering Group to provide key engineering activities for the pre-FEED and FEED stages of the project, which involves construction of a commercial-scale demonstration plant near Edmonton, Alberta.
The Genesee plant will use integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) technology and will also demonstrate the capture and permanent storage of carbon dioxide. If subsequent investment and construction decisions go ahead as planned, the 270 MW (net) plant will start operations in 2015.
The project is currently in the front-end engineering and design (FEED) stage, which will cost C$33 million and is scheduled for completion in 2009. EPCOR recently selected Siemens Fuel Gasification Technology as the technology provider for the project’s coal gasification facility.
The Genesee plant has the potential to capture more than 1.25 million t of carbon dioxide a year, according to EPCOR.
EPCOR, The Alberta Energy Research Institute and Natural Resources Canada have each contributed C$11 million to the FEED element of the project, which is being conducted in conjunction with the Canadian Clean Power Coalition.
