South African utility Eskom has unveiled plans to develop two new simple cycle gas-fired power stations at Mossel Bay and Atlantis, north of Cape Town.
The plants are expected to be commissioned in 2007 at a cost of around Rnd 4 billion (€500 million) and will add a combined capacity of 1,050 MW. The peaking plants, which will be fuelled on gas from Mossel Bay and possibly other sources, form part of Eskom's five-year expansion plan which will see the group add some 4 GW of new capacity by 2009.
As part of this programme, Eskom intends to commission three mothballed stations at Camden, Grootvlei and Komati over the next five years and the government has also put out a tender for an additional two simple cycle gas-fired plants to be run by foreign IPPs under a 15-year power purchase agreement. Each plant is expected to have a capacity of 525 MW and are to be operational by 2008. Coega and Durban are cited as the most likely locations.
