EU postpones competition probe

7 June 2005

An investigation into competition within the European gas and electricity markets has been postponed by the European Commission by one week. Blaming a busy agenda for the delay, the EC investigation is expected to focus on state aid and could trigger new antitrust cases.

The Commission is set to reform the rules under which governments can offer financial support to domestic companies and the energy sector probe will assess whether some companies are impeding the development of competition in the energy markets, and whether EU regulations are responsible.
