European consortium wins ITER contract

23 July 2010

A consortium of Italian and Spanish companies has been awarded a contract to engineer and manufacture one of the most important components of the ITER reactor.

Iberdrola Ingeniería y Construcción and Elytt Energy of Spain, together with Italy's ASG Superconductors, have signed a €156 million contract to make the toroidal field coils for the ITER reactor, which will be sited in Cadarache, France.

The contract represents one of the greatest challenges for the European power engineering industry in terms of both the technologies involved and the size of the coils, says Iberdrola.

Work on engineering and manufacturing the 100 tonne coils is expected to take seven years. The ten superconducting coils form the technological heart of the reactor, generating the magnetic field that will keep the plasma inside the reactor chamber.

IBERDROLA Ingeniería will be responsible for managing the project as well as overseeing the engineering works and quality control of the products. It will also carry out engineering work not directly associated with the superconductors.

ASG will be responsible for most of the manufacturing of the coils, while Elytt Energy will work together with ASG to establish the production processes.
