Eurus Energy Holdings plans to construct a 45 MW photovoltaic power plant in the USA that will when completed be the country's largest.
A joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power and Toyota Tsusho Corp will build the plant on leased farmland in the southern part of California. The project carries a price tag of 220 million dollars, or roughly 18.5 billion yen. About one-third of the construction costs will be covered by a subsidy programme rolled out by the U.S. government last year.
Ground may be broken by the end of September or early October, aiming at an operational date of June 2011. Eurus will employ install thin-film silicon panels made by Sharp.
Eurus has set up with American power generation firm NRG Group a 50-50 joint venture that will construct and operate the power plant.
Eurus is known primarily for its wind power operations but has operated a 994kw photovoltaic power plant in South Korea since 2008. The US plant will mark its first large-scale solar power project but it plans to increase output from its photovoltaic power operations to a total of 100 MW over the next five years and is exploring potential new projects in Europe and Asia.
