UK power company ScottishPower is reportedly planning to investigate the feasibility of using excess power generated from its wind farms to produce hydrogen with the help of a prospective DTi grant of £1 million ($1.8 million).
The group owns 183 MW of installed wind capacity across 13 often remote sites. With the farms often generating more power than can be exported through the local connection to the national grid, the group is hoping to exploit the possibilities of hydrogen generation.
ScottishPower is thought to be working on the project with Norway's Norsk Hydro, Air Products of the UK, and Logan, a US fuel cell company.
The first hydrogen could be produced in 2007.
