Extension to La Paz, Baja California Sur

16 August 2010

The Commission Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico, is extending its 2x43 MW plant at La Paz, Baja California Sur by installing a diesel power plant based on a 42.3 MW MAN B&W 12K80MC-S prime mover. The order with MAN has been place by Spanish contractor Acciona Instalaciones.

The new plant will work in combined cycle with a bottoming cycle steam turbine and produce its 42.3 MW (net) at an efficiency rate of 44.34% at site ambient conditions at the station busbar.

The engine, and its related equipment, will be supplied by MAN Diesel & Turbo’s licensee Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Korea together with Acciona Instalaciones. Hyundai Heavy Industries has already supplied a similar 43 MW plant at La Paz.

The MAN B&W plant will run on locally sourced fuel, with a viscosity of around 1100 cSt at 50°C and 4.3% sulphur content – the first two engines already operate successfully on the same fuel. The new installation complements the existing facility with one MAN B&W 10K90MC-S engine and one MAN B&W 12K80MC-S engine and fulfils all local environmental regulations.
