Fortum says it will start building a 75 MW wind farm in Sweden this summer after making a final investment decision on the €100 million project.
The Finnish energy firm is expecting to commission the Solberg wind farm in early 2018. It has contracted Sweden-based Arise to manage the construction process, while Denmark's Vestas will supply the 22 wind turbines for the project.
Fortum recently launched a new strategy to increase its wind and solar energy capacity and said that Sweden is a "natural choice" for the firm's investments.
"[Sweden] is one of our largest home markets and there we have the majority of our hydro capacity that is crucial in balancing the variability in wind power production," said senior vice president M&A Kari Kautinen.
Sweden's Skelleftea Kraft has the right to acquire a 50 per cent stake in the Solberg project, subject to a decision by its municipal owner and authority approvals.
"We have had good cooperation with Skellefteå Kraft in the Blaiken wind power park, and we are looking forward to continue our cooperation also in Solberg," added Kautinen.
