The Estlink connection between the 330 kV substation at Harku in Estonia and the 400 kV substation at Espoo in Finland is one of the priority projects in a European Union plan to improve cross-border power infrastructure, reduce blackouts and help create more efficient power markets in Europe. An estimated 2 TWh of electricity will be delivered anually into the Nordic electricity market from Baltic generation.
The partners in the Estlink project are the three Baltic power utilities - Eesti Energia, Latvenergo, Lietuvos Energija - as well as Pohjolan Voima and Helsinkin Energia of Finland.
The 105 km underground and underwater HVDC link was designed, built and installed by ABB using its HVDC Light technology in a record 19 months using modular construction.
The project, which was announced in late April 2005, is worth $110 million for ABB.
