Finnish, Swedish grids plan subsea cable

22 February 2005

A € 200 million project to link the grids of Finland and Sweden with a second submarine cable has been agreed. The 600-800 MW sea cable between the two Nordic countries will be in use in 2010 with full capacity available from 2011. The new cable, planned by Fingrid and Sweden's state-owned Svenska Kraftnat aims to remove remaining bottlenecks and enhance coordination between the region's transmission system operators.

An existing 550 MW submarine cable is being repaired with work expected to be finished in early March.
