First MXL2 upgrade package in the Middle East

28 January 2014

Alstom has secured a key contract in the United Arab Emirates with Dubai Aluminium (DUBAL), to upgrade two GT13E2 gas turbines with its MXL2 upgrade package, the object being to increase the flexibility and competitive advantage of DUBAL's combined-cycle power plant. This new contract - in conjunction with an extension to the long term service agreement (LTSA) with DUBAL - will be the first MXL2 upgrade deployed in the Middle East region. Its implementation is expected to be completed in early 2015.
Progressively evolved from existing Alstom technology, the multi-mode retrofit gives DUBAL the ability to achieve a 1% increase in combined cycle mode efficiency as already demonstrated with a previous installation of the product in the United Kingdom at South Humber Bank). It should also produce an additional 12 MW of gross power output, reduce CO2 emissions and increase service intervals by one-third, contributing to significantly lower operating costs.
Michael Rechsteiner, senior vp of Alstom Thermal Services, commented: " We are confident that MXL2 is well-suited for DUBAL and is an attractive option for many customers in the Middle East and the Gulf, where around 30% of Alstom's global GT13E2 fleet is installed."
