Fluor, B&W team up to sell CO2 capture systems

15 March 2010

Fluor Corp. and Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) are to sell carbon dioxide (CO2) capture systems to existing coal fired power plants in North America after creating a strategic alliance.

The two engineering firms are to jointly provide marketing and project execution for Fluor’s Econamine FG Plus technology, an advanced version of Fluor’s amine-based post-combustion capture system.

The technology has been commercially proven on gas turbine exhaust gas, and has been pilot tested on a coal based flue gas.

The creation of a strategic alliance will combine the two companies’ strengths, says Fluor, which has successfully installed and used the CO2 capture technology in some 23 commercial plants worldwide. B&W’s Power Generation Group has extensive expertise in the retrofit supply and integration of air quality control systems.

“Our combined efforts will position both companies to better serve our power clients in the carbon capture market,” said Dave Dunning, president of Fluor’s Power Group. “By focusing on the CO2 retrofit applications, we believe we capture and will deliver the strengths of both companies in a way that our customers will appreciate and value.”

The Econamine FG Plus process is a proprietary technology for large-scale, post-combustion CO2 capture and according to Fluor is the first and most widely applied commercial solution that has been proven in operating environments to remove CO2 from high oxygen content flue gases (up to 20 per cent by volume).

It is also the only technology available that has been commercially proven in CO2 recovery from gas turbine exhaust after being operated at a power plant in Bellingham, Massachusetts for 14 years.

As part of their agreement, B&W will provide Fluor with access to its research and development facilities and pilot plant in Barberton, Ohio, for testing and advancing the process for future coal-fired plant scale-up applications.

The agreement also includes a license for B&W to use and market the Econamine FG Plus technology.
