Fluor to build Desert Rock

13 September 2007

The 1,500 MW super-critical coal-fired Desert Rock power plant is to be built by Fluor Corp in northwest New Mexico. The contract for the design and build project, which consists of two units, was placed by the Desert Rock Energy Company.

The $3 billion development is a joint venture by the Navajo Nation's Dine Power Authority and Sithe Global Power.

The Desert Rock project is a low-sulphur, coal-fired plant that includes Best Available Control Technology (BACT) to minimise emissions, including a 15-20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

Both units are expected to reach substantial completion in late 2012 and early 2013, respectively.
