Two 50 MWe concentrated solar power (CSP) plants in Spain are to be equipped with solar steam generators from Foster Wheeler under a contracte awarded by the project's EPC contractor.
Under the contract Foster Wheeler will design and supply two sets of steam generators as well as low and high pressure feedwater heaters for the Valle 1 and Valle 2 projects in Cadiz, Spain. The projects are being built by a joint venture of Sener and Cobra.
The Valle projects will use Sener's concentrated parabolic trough technology and will use molten salt to store energy generated by the plant. The contract award is a “decisive step forward for Foster Wheeler's strategy regarding solar thermal technology,” said Foster Wheeler Energia's CEO Eric Svendsen.
The two plants are owned by Torresol Energy, a joint venture between Spain's Sener and Masdar of Abu Dhabi. Equipment delivery is scheduled for early 2011.
Torresol is aiming to reach an installed worldwide CSP capacity of 320 MW by the end of 2013. It is also developing the Gemasolar CSP project in Seville, Spain.
The 17 MWe Gemasolar facility will be the world's first commercial-scale solar thermal plant to use central tower and salt receiver technology.
