Foster Wheeler to lead Don Valley CCS development

Foster Wheeler is to lead the development of a major carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the UK after being appointed project management consultant by 2Co Power.

The planned 650 MW Don Valley power project in northern England will combine a coal gasification plant with a combined cycle power plant and will pipe captured carbon dioxide (CO2) to North Sea oilfields for storage or for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) purposes.

Foster Wheeler’s role will be to assist 2Co Power in the preparation of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts over the next six months as well as project management until the plant enters operation in 2016.

2Co Power chose Foster Wheeler for the contract because of the company’s expertise in both the hydrocarbon processing and power industries, says 2Co Power. Construction of the £3 billion plant could start in 2013.

2Co Power recently appointed BNP Paribas as its financial advisors for the project. In January it also announced that it had hired two leading CCS experts – Jonathan Briggs and Graeme Miller – to lead the commercial development of the Don Valley project.

Jonathan Briggs joins as managing director of 2Co Power. He led the Hydrogen Energy joint venture between BP and Rio Tinto in California, and was responsible for managing the $2.5 billion carbon capture and storage project that is now under development by SCS Energy.

Graeme Miller will be commercial director. He was most recently commercial director for Hydrogen Energy’s CCS power project in California and previously worked on BP’s Peterhead CCS project.
