US utility Luminant has reported that 14 companies have expressed an interest in taking part in the utility’s plans to build two commercial demonstration coal gasification power plants in Texas.
The strong level of interest has prompted Luminant, a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings, to extend the period for clarifying questions by a month.
The company issued a Request for Proposals from companies offering Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) or other coal gasification technologies with the ability to capture carbon dioxide emissions late last year. It expects to select two or more competing proposals for the commercial deployment of gasification technologies using Powder River Basin coal and lignite coal as the primary fuel source.
Luminant's timeline calls for detailed proposals to be submitted by June 2008. The project is designed to advance the development of IGCC as well as carbon capture and storage technologies.
