France approves 1.6 GW of wind

22 July 2005

Some 325 permits to build 1,557 MW of wind capacity have been approved in France over the course of a year, according to the Industry Ministry.

With a further 3,000 MW of wind capacity and nearly 230 projects under consideration, the country is on course to boost its capacity nearly five times by 2007.

With installed wind capacity rising to 368 MW last year from 240 MW the year before, the ministry says, "Taking into account the rate of connection, the 2,000 MW mark of installed capacity should be crossed at the beginning of 2007. At this rate, the 12,000 MW mark of authorised capacity could be crossed around 2010."
