The French government has awarded contracts for the country’s first pilot projects testing floating offshore wind technology to a consortium led by Quadran and another led by Eolfi.
Quadran will build a 24 MW project near Gruissan, while Eolfi and its partner, CGN, will build a four-turbine facility in the Groix area of Brittany. Senvion is likely to supply three or four of its turbines to the Quadran project, while GE will supply the turbines for the Eolfi project.
The tender for these projects was the first of four planned by France, and will be the first in the world to test floating offshore wind technology on an industrial scale.
Development and construction of the wind farms will take around four years. The French government is providing €150 million of funding for the projects as a mixture of subsidies and loans.
