Gail plans gas-fired power plant in Tripura

5 August 2002

The Gas Authority of India (Gail) is hoping to construct a 500 MW power plant in Tripura, which is facing a ruinous power shortage. Though details of the scheme have not yet been finalised, the Ministry of Energy is trying involve a Japanese company to help with the funding.

Gas for the plant will be imported from Bangladesh. Gail is one of three public sector companies involved in supplying gas from Bangladesh to potential customers in India.

The energy ministry launched a similar project last year in West Tripura. Work on the 500 MW scheme began last October. Power from this plant will be supplied to Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and some northeastern states. Construction is due to be completed in three years.
