Energy giants E.On and Gazprom are to strengthen their co-operative ties with the construction and operation of a combined cycle gas turbine power plant in Germany.
The plant will be built in Lubmin near the landfall of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, subject to a final investment decision by the two companies in 2009. The 1200 MW plant is scheduled to start operating in 2011.
The new plant will use natural gas from the Nord Stream pipeline, which is currently being developed by E.On, Gazprom and BASF. The pipeline will link Russia and the European Union via the Baltic Sea, transporting up to 55 billion m3 of gas per year.
The project is an important part of E.On and Gazprom’s plans to collaborate on the sale of Russian gas in Europe, and also part of E.On’s ambitious EUR60 billion investment programme for new markets and advanced technologies.
