GDF Suez has acquired West Coast Energy, a UK-based developer of wind capacity. The transaction strengthens GDF Suez's commitment to expand its wind portfolio in the UK.

GDF Suez has been working in partnership with West Coast Energy to develop wind projects in the UK since 2008. The company employs 55 people and is headquartered in Mold, North Wales.

"Over its 18 years of operation West Coast Energy has developed 650 MW of wind capacity in the UK"

"The West Coast Energy team have significant experience in wind energy development that will complement our existing in-house expertise in structuring, financing, building and managing projects in the UK market," said Steve Riley CEO and president of GDF Suez Energy UK-Europe.

Over its 18 years of operation West Coast Energy has developed 650 MW of wind capacity in the UK, which GDF Suez says represents 9% of the installed onshore wind capacity. In addition, WCE has a 'significant pipeline' of onshore wind development projects under evaluation with a capacity of 200 MW.

GDF Suez currently owns seven operating wind farms across the UK with a total capacity of 70 MW. Six projects developed in partnership with West Coast Energy are: Carsington (8.2 MW), Crimp (2.4 MW), Flimby (6.2 MW) and Sober Hill (12.3 MW) in England; and Blantyre Muir (12.3 MW) and Barlockhart Moor (8.2 MW) in Scotland.
