Vattenfall Group and Gaz de France (GDF) have signed an agreement to undertake a pilot CO2 capture and injection project in Germany. The project is part of GDF's research programme on the capture, injection and storage of CO2 and is consistent with its drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, says the utility.
Under the agreement, Vattenfall will supply CO2 from its power plants to Erdgas Erdöl GmbH Berlin (EEG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of GDF in Germany. The CO2 will be used for the enhancement of gas recovery from EEG's almost depleted Altmark gas field.
GDF is already involved in a number of CO2 storage project in Europe, and has in recent years been carrying out CO2 injection experiments on the K12-B gas field in the Dutch North Sea.
The Altmark gas field is the second largest onshore field in Europe. The project will take approximately 15 months to implement.
