GE has launched a new company to supply the increasing market for so-called mission-critical facilities. The market is continuing to grow exponentially worldwide, and so does the need for reliable power - for example, the data centre industry has seen its electrical power demand double between the years 2000 and 2005 to 247 TWh per year. The new GE enterprise is to be known as its Critical Power business and will provide data centres, hospitals, telecommunication networks and similar facilities with end-to-end solutions to keep the electricity supply intact during power disturbances and outages. "The focus of GE's Critical Power business is to help customers reduce energy consumption and minimise the operating costs associated with supplying power to their mission-critical applications," said Jeff Schnitzer, general manager of GE's new business. "We support our customers from the front-end design through the lifecycle of the equipment."
Headquartered in Plano, Texas, the new business includes power-switching products, UPS technology, DC energy systems and embedded power supplies such as board-mounted power and front-end rectifiers.
