GE’s 2.5 series wind turbines have achieved landmark sales by reaching 2 GW of installed capacity worldwide, a feat announced at the European Wind Energy Association’s 2012 conference in Copenhagen in April.
And by the end of the year, more than 2000 of these 100-metre rotor turbines will be operating in 15 countries, including 12 countries in Europe. The model has now surpassed 7 million operational hours.
The 2.5 technology has been selected for two of the world’s largest wind projects: the 845 MW Shepherds Flat wind farm in Oregon, the first use of the 2.5 technology in the United States, and CEZ Romania’s 600 MW Fantanele wind farm, Europe’s largest onshore wind project.
The 2.5 series evolved from GE's 1.5 series WTG and has been designed to be efficient in a broad range of wind conditions. The 2.5 family is built on the proven performance of GE’s 1.5 wind turbine, the most widely deployed machine in the wind industry with more than 16 500 units installed worldwide.
