Getting Vasilikos back on line

7 August 2012

GE reports that two of the four 6FA gas turbines at the Vasilikos power station on Cyprus are back in service, having been damaged by a blast wave from the huge explosion on 11 July 2011 at the nearby Evangelos Florakis Naval Base. The remaining units are expected to be back in operation before the end of the year.

The power station, owned by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), represents more than 50% of the power capacity installed on Cyprus. Rapid rehabilitation was critical for island residents, helping the country regain its power autonomy and limiting the significant costs associated with the use of temporary generator sets.
