Globeleq signs power extension deal

20 October 2011

The government of Cote d’Ivoire has signed a concession agreement with power company Globeleq to expand the Azito power plant.

The UK-based emerging markets specialist is to convert the 288 MW power plant into a combined cycle plant capable of generating around half of Cote d’Ivoire’s total electricity needs.

“Globeleq is proud to contribute to the expansion of the electricity sector with the positive impact on the economic development of Cote d’Ivoire and further establishing Globeleq’s strategy to be the leading power company in Africa,” said Globeleq CEO Mikael Karlsson.

Globeleq says that it will add a steam cycle to the existing plant’s two gas turbines to increase capacity by 50 per cent to 420 MW. The existing Azito plant sells electricity under a 24-year concession agreement with the Cote D’Ivoire government.
