Greece's prime minister George Papandreou has announced plans to construct the world's largest solar photovoltaic (PV) installation on a brownfield site in the north of the country.
The project is part of Greece's plans to pull itself out of recession through investment in green technologies.
The 200 MW installation would be built at Kozani, where an ageing lignite-fired mine-mouth power plant generates around 40 per cent of Greece's electricity needs.
The project includes a plan to construct a solar panel manufacturing plant, according to state utility PPC, which is planning to launch an international tender for the project.
In October last year the Greek government announced plans to attract up to €44 billion of renewable energy investment by 2015 in order to help turn around its ailing economy.
