US energy regulator FERC has said that energy companies must comply with rules for operating the transmission grid, or risk losing the right to recover certain costs from customers. Having recently clarified its operating standards, FERC revised a policy statement to ensure that power companies follow the rules and could, for example, prevent full cost recovery to a transmission provider that fails to follow the operating guidelines.
The North American Electric Reliability Council approved the adjustments that include guidelines on maintaining voltage levels and keeping tree limbs away from transmission lines.
