The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has carried out a safety review of units 3 and 4 of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant in Bulgaria, following a request from the Bulgarian government. The review follows more than a decade of safety upgrades and assessments and included a series of actions recommended by various IAEA review teams.
The IAEA team concluded that the operational and design safety at Kozloduy now corresponded to the level of improvement seen at similar vintage plants. The analysis confirmed that the reactors can cope with loss of coolant accidents involving primary pipe breaks.
The detailed report and the findings are expected to be released soon. Kozloduy NPP management has estimated that total investment in safety improvements at the plant between 1991 and 2006 will exceed E700 million.
