Iberdrola says that it is leading the development of renewable energy in Mexico after buying from Gamesa the rights to develop a 70 MW wind farm.
The Dos Arbolitos wind farm in the state of Oaxaca will enter operation in 2014 and increase Iberdrola's wind energy capacity in Mexico to 278 MW from four sites.
Iberdrola has commissioned Gamesa to build the facility. The company already operates just under 5 GW of gas-fired capacity in Mexico, where it is a leading independent power producer and produces around 14.5 per cent of all the electricity generated.
The Dos Arbolitos wind farm will be equipped with 35 Gamesa wind turbines and will be located in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of the windiest areas in the world.
Mexico had an installed wind energy capacity of 1370 MW at the end of 2012, according to the Global Wind Energy Council.
