Renewable energy firm Iberdrola Renovables says that it has consolidated its position in the Spanish renewable energy market through the purchase of a 244 MW wind power portfolio from Gamesa.
The transaction forms part of an agreement signed in 2005 by the two Spanish companies, and brings Iberdrola Renovables’ installed renewable energy capacity in the Andalusia region to almost 800 MW. It now has a total installed capacity in Spain of over 5500 MW.
Iberdrola has invested around EUR320 million in the El Andévalo wind portfolio, including the purchase price and the construction of transmission infrastructure to connect the wind farms to the grid. The portfolio consists of seven wind farms situated in the south of Huelva province.
As part of the agreement, Iberdrola constructed a double circuit 120 km, 220 kV power line to connect the wind farms to the grid. This infrastructure will also strengthen the interconnection between Spain and Portugal, says Iberdrola Renovables.
Iberdrola Renovables’ parent company, Spanish utility Iberdrola, announced recently that it invested a total of EUR550 million in 2009 on the Spanish electricity grid. It added around 3300 MVA to the system, commissioning 22 new substations, almost 3000 km of power lines and around 3200 transformers stations.
All of the wind farms feature Gamesa’s G90 and G58 wind turbines with a unit capacity of 2 MW and 0.85 MW, respectively.
