Iberdrola boosts rural electrification in Brazil

19 April 2010

Iberdrola increased spending on rural electrification projects in Brazil by over 74 per cent in 2009.

The Spain-based firm, which is active in Brazil’s electricity distribution market through subsidiary Neoenergia, says that it has connected more than two million people to the grid since 2004, and in 2009 spent EUR52.3 million to electrify rural and deprived areas.

The electrification projects are part of Brazil’s “Luz para Todos”, or “Power for all” programme, which was initiated in 2003. Iberdrola has installed a total of 82 000 km of electricity cables and more than 1.1 million posts since 2004.

Through Neoenergia, Iberdrola is the leading electricity distributor in northeastern Brazil, with a market share of over 40 per cent in the region’s market.
