Jasper Power Company has selected a consortium formed by Iberdrola Ingeniería and Group Five to build a 96 MW photovoltaic (PV) plant in South Africa.
The Jasper PV project is being developed by American firm Solar Reserve and is part of South Africa's round two renewable IPP programme. Iberdrola Ingeniería and Group Five will be responsible for engineering, equipment supply, civil engineering, assembly and start-up of the plant.
Under the terms of their $150 million contract, the consortium partners will also develop the transformer substation and 132 kV overhead power line that will feed the plant's energy into the national grid.
The two firms will also be responsible for operation and maintenance of the plant for 15 years.
The Jasper PV project will be located near the city of Postmasburg in Northern Cape province, and will consist of 325 000 polycrystalline modules spread over 180 ha.
South Africa's renewable energy IPP programme aims to 3725 MW of renewable energy capacity to the grid over five round of bidding. Round two called for the construction of eight PV plants and seven wind farms.
Iberdrola Ingeniería and Group Five are also developing two wind farms with a combined capacity of 101 MW in South Africa.
