Iberdrola’s renewable energy subsidiary Iberdrola Renovables has announced the creation of an offshore wind energy division to develop a major portfolio of projects.
The Spanish company was recently awarded the rights together with Vattenfall to build one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms – the East Anglia Array, which will have a capacity of up to 7200 MW.
It has also announced plans to invest EUR9 billion between 2010 and 2012 to accelerate its international expansion and consolidate its position in the global wind sector.
Iberdrola’s new division will be incorporated into ScottishPower Renewables and will have three departments covering operations and maintenance, business development, and commercial. It will implement Iberdrola Renovables’ wind project portfolio, which also includes 2500 MW of capacity around Europe.
To consolidate its position in the global wind market, Iberdrola Renovables is planning to invest EUR4.9 billion in the US, EUR1.9 billion in the UK, EUR1 billion in Spain and EUR1.2 billion in the rest of the world.
In addition to the East Anglia Array, Iberdrola Renovables is planning the construction of 1700 MW of wind power capacity in the UK. In Spain, it has applied to place zones under reserve for feasibility studies as prior steps to seeking permits for six projects off the coasts of Cádiz, Castellón and Huelva.
