Spanish firm Iberdrola Renovables is to develop nine new wind farms with a total capacity of 258 MW in Brazil after taking part in the Brazilian government's latest renewable energy auction.
Iberdrola participated in the tender with Brazilian firm Neoenergia and will be paid between R$132.8 and R$137.99/MWh for energy generated by the new wind farms. The supply contract has a period of 20 years from 2013.
Brazilian firm Asa Branca won contracts totalling 108 MW, while Italy's Enel Green Power was awarded contracts for 90 MW of power.
The auction also included other sources of renewable energy such as biomass and small hydropower. Overall, 50 wind farm projects with a combined installed capacity of 1520 MW were awarded in the tender.
The contracts are a major boost for Iberdrola Renovables, which is targeting Latin America as a major growth market and which last month announced an agreement with Neoenergia to exploit opportunities in the market.
Enel says that it was awarded the contract based on three projects in Bahia state with a capacity factor of around 50 per cent - among the highest in the world. The three new plants will double Enel Green Power's installed capacity in Brazil.
