Iberdrola inaugurates Middle East CCGT

Iberdrola Ingenieria y Construcción has completed construction of one of the largest combined cycle (CCGT) poer plants in the Middle East, the 2000 MW Mesaieed plant in Qatar.

The Spanish engineering firm was awarded the $1655 million tender for the turnkey project in March 2007. The new plant - which has been inaugurated by the Emir of Qatar, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani - will supply around 40 per cent of the power generated in the country.

The Mesaieed plant comprises three configuration groups (2 x 2 x 1) and two black start turbines, with a total of six 9FA gas turbines, six HRSG recovery boilers, three D11 type condensing steam turbines, and two 6B dual gas-diesel turbines. It was built for MPCL, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Electricity Water Company (QEWC), Marubeni Corporation and Chubu Electric.

The plant includes one of the largest power substations in the world, covering an area of over 12 250 m2. This giant distribution facility consists of three buildings, two of which have adjoining control centres.

25 000 cubic metres of concrete and 3.5 million tonnes of steel were used In its construction.
