Iberdrola Ingeniería has signed a turnkey contract to build a 61 MW wind farm in Kenya.
The Spanish engineering firm is to install 38 GE wind turbines at the site of the Kinangop wind farm, 40 km northwest of Nairobi. The project is a key step forward in the firm's ambitions to expand its global presence and win work in its list of priority African countries.
The Kinangop wind farm is being developed by Aeolus Kenya and will be owned by a group of investors that includes Macquarie and Old Mutual sponsored African Infrastructure Investment Fund II and the Norwegian Investment fund for developing countries Norfund.
The Iberdrola subsidiary will handle engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning. The hubs for each 1.6 MW wind turbine will stand almost 80 m tall and will have a rotor diameter spanning 82.5 m.
Kenya is a priority country for Iberdrola Ingeniería, which is also building the 13.6 MW Ngong II wind farm and a large-scale electricity grid upgrade project there.
